Promote environmental standardization: A meeting with the heads of international standards organizations

The Minister of Environmental Protection, Idit Silman: « The Israeli industry will proceed in the coming years in accordance with the environmental requirements of the international standardization that will be adopted and implemented in Israel, with the goal of leading the Israel economy and world to outstanding environmental performance. »

The Minister of Environmental Protection, Idit Silman and the Ministry Director General Assaf Yazdi met today, Tuesday, in the Israeli pavilion at the climate conference in Baku, Azerbaijan COP 29 with Sergio Mujica, Secretary General of the ISO and Vice President of IEC, Vimal Mahendru and discussed the topic of environmental standardization. In addition, they were joined by Vice President of standards at the Standards Institution of Israel, Dalia Yarom and Vice President of communications external relations at the Institution, Vered Oren.

The Minister and Ministry Director General presented to the organization heads the main policies and actions the Israeli Ministry of Environmental Protection in a variety of policy tools, including steps to adjust the environmental performance of the Israeli industry according to international standardization in various fields with the goal of reducing negative environmental effects both in the production stages as well as the product itself. Among other things, they presented the ministry’s plans of establishing environmental rules for varies businesses within the framework of integrated licensing, as well as the implementation of the second phase of the standardization for green building and the obligation to comply with its legislation. In addition, they presented applying the obligation to report energy efficiency of electrical products on its label, in compliance with European standardization and legislation, as an example of actions the ministry is taking to establish rules for providing reliable information on product performance to consumers to promote environmentally optimal consumer choice and use.

The parties also discussed the continuation of increasing the coordination between standardization in Israel and international standardization for the purpose of improving the environmental performance of the Israeli and global economy, and they agreed upon a joint effort in exchanging information and integrating Israeli factors into the international standardization process with the goal of advancing the adoption of international standardization in Israel and adapting to Israels unique circumstances without creating trade barriers between Israel and the rest of the world.

The heads of standardization organizations expressed their impressions on the innovation of Israeli technology companies in climate and environment fields. They noted that integration of additional Israeli companies and entities in the process of international standardization preparation can reduce the need to adapt standardizations in Israel at a later stage. Moreover, this will help Israeli companies to prove their contribution to improving the environment and fight against climate change and thereby increasing their activity in the international market.
